Vocational training in summer camps bridges cultures

2025-07-23

China has launched a sweeping new drive to upgrade vocational skills nationwide. According to the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, the effort aims to address critical talent shortages in manufacturing and service areas.

The three-year campaign, which will run from 2025 to the end of 2027, will focus on increasing the number of skilled professionals in key sectors under the theme "Skills Light Up the Future."

In alignment with this national vision, the "Meet Your Future Self" 2025 Summer Camp was held successfully in Beijing's Chaoyang District. Organized by the district's Vocational Training and Development Promotion Association, the program offered primary and secondary school students a dynamic, hands-on introduction to future careers.

Interactive workshops, such as "Little Coffee Connoisseurs," taught students the art of hand-brewed coffee. In the "Little Tea Ceremony Masters" session, students learned about China's traditional tea etiquette and experienced the cultural significance of tea through the ritual of serving.

Other creative modules, such as "Photography Journalist" and "Collage Art Designer," aimed to foster observational skills, artistic creativity, and an appreciation for the humanities.

A standout feature of the camp was its innovative Chinese-English bilingual teaching model led by international students currently studying at Chinese colleges. Participating in these workshops helped them build cross-cultural communication skills and strengthen young Chinese students' vocational knowledge, laying a foundation for future participation in global technical collaboration.

The activity also provided Dennis Kiplagat Mutungwo, a Kenyan student currently studying in China, with a fulfilling and meaningful experience. "It's one of the best things I've done, coming here today to understand what they're doing and enjoy their company," Mutungwo told CGTN during the teaching session.

Looking ahead, China has set the talent cultivation targets. According to an earlier Xinhua news agency report, China aims to develop a skilled workforce by 2035, including 2,000 national-level master artisans, 10,000 provincial-level master artisans, and 50,000 city-level master artisans, each equipped with advanced expertise and innovative thinking.
